OUR STORY

People move to other countries to seek a quality of life that they have not found in their own homeland. Like other migrants, there are several reasons why Shiela Hernandez and her family have chosen to migrate. Still, the most compelling one was the opportunity to live together as a family. Here’s her immigration journey from her home country Philippines to New Zealand (NZ).

Before they left, Shiela’s husband was a baker on a cruise ship; he was one of the many seafarers in the Philippines who worked for ten months at sea and spent the remaining two months with their family. Working as a baker in the Philippines was not feasible since the average salary for this job is not enough to raise a family.

However, a baker was included in the list of immediate skill shortages in New Zealand. Thus, employers were willing to sponsor overseas workers.

Shiela’s husband first came to New Zealand in March 2014. He was approved for a three-year work visa. The family waited for him to get settled and finish his probationary period before they followed.

In June 2014, Shiela’s work visa was under the partnership track, and her daughter’s student visa was approved. They arrived in Timaru, New Zealand, in July 2014.
The family decided that Shiela would stay at home for a while to accompany her daughter while she adjusted to living in New Zealand. They enrolled her in a primary school 5 minutes away from their flat. School started at 9 until 3 pm, and while waiting for her daughter, Sheila devoted her free time to learning how to process their family’s residence visa. She lodged their application in August 2014, and it was approved within four months.

As she researched and read information on New Zealand migration, Sheila also helped several family members prepare their documents and process their visas. She enjoyed sharing their journey with their friends. Many Filipinos also reached out for help regarding their visa applications.

Sheila started to direct them to immigration websites and forums. However, she realized that many migrants do not have the time and resources needed to read and understand all of New Zealand’s immigration policies and procedures. A lot of them needed assistance in navigating the constantly changing immigration rules.

In New Zealand, Immigration advice should be provided only by a licensed advisor or an exempt person. The only legal way to help others with their visa applications is to become a licensed advisor.

SDH started in 2017 with the goal of assisting Filipinos with their visa requirement needs in New Zealand.

Since many Filipinos are asking for assistance on how to get a job in New Zealand, SDH started the Job Search Assistance service that helped connect skilled Filipino workers to Health Care and Trades Companies that are looking to expand their workforce.

We take it to heart when we say, “We serve our clients.” We exhaust all means, closely scrutinize details, and advocate your case to Immigration. We will be there with you every step of the way until we achieve your Immigrations goals.

What is the Study-Work Pathway?

Here are the 3 main reasons why others choose this Study-Work Pathway:
